Local Mom Announces Run for School Board

Virginia Savietto Wants to Hear from You

By Virginia Savietto June 6, 2020

It's been about three months since our kids last set foot in school.

Though we have yet to learn how schools will reopen in August, we know it will look very different.

How should schools reopen?

Are you comfortable sending your child back?

What concerns you?

Would you favor continuing with distance learning?

How would you handle it if your child would go to school every other day?

As a candidate, striving to represent you, I want to listen and learn from your experiences.

Will you share your thoughts with me?

About Virginia:

I am excited to announce my run for Palm Beach County School Board, District 2. Election Day is August 18th, 2020.

As the mother of a young boy who attends our local public school, as an immigrant who came to this country from South America in the 1980s, as a certified teacher having worked my way through school and later college, as a thirty-plus year resident of the district with deep ties to this community, I am uniquely qualified to represent the parents, kids and teachers in our district.

When I first came here as a thirteen-year-old with my parents from Argentina, I didn’t speak English and school was hard for me. But I buckled down, worked hard and managed to advance. I graduated from Lake Worth High School, went on to earn two bachelor’s degrees, a teacher certification and eventually a master’s degree while working and paying the bills as a single mom.
For three years, I taught Adult English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at Lake Worth High School. And I am currently an Adjunct Professor at Palm Beach State College.

Professionally, I work as an aide for Palm Beach County Commissioner Gregg Weiss, but my career path includes experience in both the private and non-profit sectors.

I am running for the 9-year old boy who I tuck in each night and the close to 200,000 kids in the district just like him. I understand the challenges of having to balance work and raise children. I’m running for the parents who want their kids to do well in school. For the thousands of teachers and other district employees who work hard and deserve support, I want to represent you.

Good public education is the cornerstone of the American Dream and something worth fighting for. All children deserve a chance at a good education and a better life. Public education is what got me to where I am, and I want to give back to my community.

As your District 2 School Board Member, my priorities will include:
• guaranteeing all children receive a quality education
• ensuring adequate school safety
• increasing graduation rates
• implementing initiatives that will prepare our students to be successful after graduation by going to college or learning a trade
• providing additional mental health awareness and services - as too many children fall victim to bullying and experience depression
• supporting accessible, professional development for teachers
• finding ways to improve recruitment, retention and pay for good teachers

I look forward to introducing myself to you in the coming weeks and hope to earn the opportunity to represent you as your Palm Beach County School Board Member, District 2.

Thank you,

Virginia Savietto
