This September, thousands of individuals nationwide will join together in the battle against childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases by participating in the Palm Beach County St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer nationally sponsored by Target, Thrivent Mutual Funds and American Airlines.  Palm Beach is one of 61 cities nationwide helping bring attention to these terrible diseases during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
In Palm Beach County, the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer will take place Sept. 24, at John Prince Park.
Thanks to generous donors and events like the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer, families like Chloe never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80 percent since it opened more than 50 years ago. St. Jude won’t stop until no child dies from cancer. With the support of Walk/Run participants, donors and more, we can end childhood cancer together.
Funds raised help patients like Chloe from Fort Lauderdale. In January 2013, Chloe’s parents moved with her and her twin sister, Hanna, to China for work. Soon afterward, they noticed that 11-month-old Chloe was tilting her head to the left. Chloe’s parents took her to several doctors, who said not to be concerned. But deep down, Chloe’s mom believed there was a problem.
On a visit to the United States, the family took Chloe to yet another pediatrician. This time, tests revealed Chloe had a brain tumor called Ependymoma. Chloe had surgery to remove the tumor. While she was recovering, her mother saw an ad for St. Jude on television. “As soon as I saw St. Jude,” says Chloe’s mom, “I told my husband, that’s where we’re going.”
At St. Jude, Chloe underwent two additional brain surgeries to remove tumor growth. She then received chemotherapy and radiation therapy. “Here, we have a place to stay, we have a meal card, a way to get around,” says Chloe’s mom. “That means so much for us. Here, we have support.”
Now 4 years old, Chloe is finished with treatment and visits St. Jude for regular checkups. “St. Jude is a warm place,” says Chloe’s mom. “Everyone cares about you. When you come here, you have hope.
“We are excited to have the community come out for this great family friendly event,” said Claudia Ruiz Levy, 2017 St. Jude Walk/Run Event Chair and President, CRL Media and Advertising. “More importantly, their commitment to raise funds help ensure that St. Jude has the freedom to focus on what matters most – saving kids regardless of their financial situation.”
All Palm Beach County community members are invited to participate and registration for the Palm Beach County St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer is $10 for adults and children ages 6 and up. Participants are encouraged to form teams and raise funds to help support the lifesaving mission of St. Jude.
National series sponsors for the event include: Target and American Airlines. National walk/run teams include: Tri Delta, NYCO, Brooks Brothers, Delta Sigma Theta, Autotrader.com, Epsilon Sigma Alpha, Chili’s Bar & Grill, The Limited, Westfield and Destination XL Group.
